PMH Atwater, LHD

P. M. H. Atwater, L.H.D. began her research of the near-death phenomenon in 1978, after having had three near-death experiences within three months. To date, her work covers nearly 5,000 adult and child experiencers. Some of her findings have been verified in clinical studies, among them the prospective study done in Holland and published in Lancet Medical Journal (12-15-01). For this talk, she combines her work in near-death states with the research she did in the sixties in her home state of Idaho where she started Idaho’s first non-profit metaphysical corporation called Inner Forum. Over 3,000 people learned about altered states of consciousness, mysticism, psychic phenomena, and the transformation of consciousness under this aegis. She has been given many awards, several from IANDS.

Jeff O'Driscoll, MD

While near-death experiences are increasingly discussed among medical providers, including incidence, proposed mechanisms and long-term impact on experiencers, far less attention is given to shared-death experiences, which may be as common or more common among medical providers. By sharing personal experiences and experiences for colleagues, this presentation will initiate the normalization of shared-death experiences among medical providers and invite collaboration and research into the phenomena

Spencer Olsen, BMus & Jeff Olsen, BSc

Father and son (Jeffery Olsen & Spencer Olsen) share their two drastically different experiences of an auto accident that took the lives of half their family. Jeffery (the Father) having profound Near-Death Experiences, Out-of-Body Experiences and After-Death Communications, while Spencer (the Son, only 7 years of age at the time of the accident) had no NDE nor mystical experience at all and was left to navigate grief, loss and trauma as an innocent child. Now, the two come together to share where their paths have taken them and why. And how they are bonded beyond the experience through a unifying knowledge of love.

Joe Hain

Joseph Hain is a graduate of Holy Family University, Class of 2020. He studied psychology from a mental health perspective and interned as a social worker at Wesley Enhanced Living in Philadelphia, PA. As a child, Joseph had a deep interest in spirituality that led him to feel called to serve as a priest. He is in the process of being received into The Episcopal Church and continuing his education through Biblical Training.  Joe’s interest in Near-Death Experiences (NDEs) started at a young age when he read the book Heaven is For Real. This book, coupled with his passion for religion andnpsychology grew from there. He has read other perspectives on death from Judaism’s idea of the gilgul (reincarnated soul) to Tibetan Buddhism’s Bardo Thodol and more. When it comes to beliefs on death and NDEs, it can not be denied that something happens after we die or nearly die. Why is it that some people have an NDE and others do not? How do those in Generation Y come to understand and embrace Near-Death Experiences?
Certainly IANDS is a big help!

John Hain

John Hain is a computer management information systems major at Holy Family University. He was introduced to NDE’s through his brother and some friends. His father has taken great interest in the topic through the book “Imagine Heaven“ and has shared many of the stories. NDE’s captured John’s interest and he is excited to continue learning about them.

Darren McEnaney

Darren McEnaney is 25 years old. At the age of 12 following a traumatic event he developed a severe general anxiety disorder. Over a short time this anxiety became focused around his health and subsequently lead to a strong fear of death. At the time, Ihe believed that the death of the body meant the end of everything he knew and loved. This became a depression, which forced Darren out of mainstream education and ultimately at 16 he became suicidal. Thankfully, due to his fear of death, he didn’t follow through but he saw no future beyond anxiety and depression for the rest of his life.

Having never been religious in any way, despite attending a religious school throughout my childhood, Darren had always turned to science to answer the big questions of life, of which he was always interested in.  Over time he began coming across experiences that seemed to counter the purely scientific materialistic perspective. Initially, he dismissed these accounts as fanciful or the result of damaged brains, psychedelic chemistry, or self-delusion.

That was until he came across the phenomena of veridical perception. Commonly associated with NDEs but also in out of body phenomena, mediumship, and various other forms of psi-based practice. This piqued his interest, especially those cases where third-party verification was involved, and with which medical data and scientific study data were available.

Darren continued looking at the scientific study of such phenomena, and subsequently started the Seeking I project in 2018 as a means of sharing his research with others who were interested and documenting his journey through the learning process. At this point, although his beliefs are always subject to change as he discovers new information, Darren no longer sees death as a cessation of the self and life as meaningless with nothing to show for it at the end.

Seeking I acts as a platform of video interviews, discussions, debates, and podcasts with some of the leading researchers and experiencers in the fields of anomalous consciousness studies, and is expanding slowly to help this important information reach a wider audience.

Roland Achenjang, PharmD

Dr. Roland Achenjang grew up in Cameroon, West Africa. His exposure to the cultures in Cameroon, America, and other parts of the world were enriching and a source of a lot of confusion about life on planet Earth. For over twenty-eight years, he questioned all of it. He employed his Catholic teachings, local folklore and diverse cultural beliefs, and pharmacy and business school knowledge to help in vain. In frustration, he taught himself to meditate in 2013/2014. After years of maintaining the practice, he had a spiritually transformative experience (STE) on August 21st, 2018. He immediately remembered who and why he truly is and this put the entire Earth life experience into a perspective he now believes makes more sense than any understanding he held before. The aftereffects of his STE are like those of near-death experiencers. Today, Roland’s passion is helping you remember who and why you truly are.

Panelists: BRUCE GREYSON, MD, RAYMOND MOODY, PhD, MD, JOHN AUDETTE, MS, MICHAEL SABOM, MD, PMH ATWATER, LHD, DIANE CORCORAN, PhD, RN, KIMBERLY CLARK SHARP, MSW, LICSW

Saturday 6:00-7:50pm EDT

Room 1

90-110 Minutes

Join the founders of IANDS and a couple special guests as they reminisce and discuss the progress of the last 40 years of NDE research and developments!

Moderator: Nancy Evans Bush, MA

40 years embedded in IANDS, author of 3 related books.

Over four decades, Nancy Evans Bush, MA, has built a reputation as a trusted pioneer in research of those near-death experiences which are not the usual peaceful kind but are distressing, downright frightening or even hellish. Well known to IANDS conference audiences, she addresses the long struggle to make sense of a disempowering NDE of the Void.

She says, “At the beginning, learning about ‘all this’–the spirituality, the consciousness, the psychic elements–was like finding threads of meaning, I thought, if one could only get enough of them to braid together, there would be some understanding to work with.” Her unexpected, sometimes humorous, often synchronistic discoveries provide both challenges and reassurance.

Nancy’s most recent book, Reckoning: Discoveries after a Traumatic Near-Death Experience, is a partial gathering of the threads she has been following to achieve the serenity of her present outlook. Bruce Greyson has called her first book, Dancing Past the Dark: Distressing Near-Death Experiences, “the bible on its topic”.

Debbie James NDE

Moderator: Debbie James, MSN, RN, CCRN-K

Debbie James, MSN, RN, CCRN-K has worked in the Adult Critical Care arena for the last 44 years as a clinical nurse, nurse manager, nurse educator, and Clinical Nurse Specialist. She is a certified bereavement facilitator and formed two support groups in San Antonio: one for near-death experiencers (NDErs) and for organ donor families. After completing her master’s thesis on NDEs and Disclosure, she served on the Board of the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS). In 2009, Debbie co-authored and edited the first compilation of research on near-death experiences, Handbook of Near-Death Experiences: Thirty Years of Investigation. She has delivered numerous presentations regarding NDEs and spiritually transformative experiences (STEs) to small group sessions/classes as well as international conferences audiences.

Bruce Greyson, MD

IANDS originally stood for International Association for Near-Death Studies. However, as the organization has focused more and more on providing support and services to near-death experiencers and less and less on research, it may be time to rebrand IANDS the International Association for Near-Death Services. I will review the history of IANDS from its founding as a collective of researchers to a source of support for experiencers and their significant others, and for reliable information for the general public. The COVID-19 pandemic has produced unprecedented global death anxiety with persistent societal and psychological consequences. That combined with global climate change and worldwide political and social unrest suggest a greater than ever need for IANDS to promote a larger perspective on life and death today.

Raymond Moody, PhD, MD

Raymond A. Moody Jr, Ph.D., MD is a world-renowned scholar, lecturer, and researcher, and is widely recognized as the leading authority on near-death experiences as he coined the term NDE. He is the bestselling author of many books, including Life After LifeGlimpses of EternityThe Light Beyond, and Coming Back. Dr. Moody’s work profoundly illuminates our understanding of death, dying and grief and offers compelling answers to the question: Is there an afterlife? Learn more at Dr. Moody’s website: https://lifeafterlife.com/

He is also the author of “Fred’s Miracle Moment” expected to be published in the fall of 2021.

Michael completed his medical education at the Univ. of Texas Medical Branch in 1970 and completed his cardiology training at the Univ. of Florida in 1978. After finishing his training, Dr. Sabom spent a few years as an assistant professor of cardiology at Emory Univ. before moving into private practice. Dr. Sabom has written two books about NDEs. The first book, Recollections of Death: A Medical Investigation, was released in 1982 Sabom presented interviews with 116 people who had experienced a near-death crisis which he discusses and classifies. This book was positively received and has been cited over 800 times in scholarly works, according to Google Scholar. The second book, Light and Death, was released in 1998. The book is notable for describing the Pam Reynolds near-death case that received media attention, among the additional 160 patients following near-death crises. Dr. Sabom will also announce regarding an upcoming movie production.

She helped facilitate research conducted on the reality of events which we now know as Near-Death Experiences (NDEs).
